I have the honour to invite reference to the
fourth paragraph of my secret despatch dated 9th November,
1937, regarding damage done to rolling stock of the
British Section, Kowloon-Canton Railway, by Japanese
air raids in China and to request that if any action for
recovery of expenses is contemplated a further claim of
$7,000 may be preferred on behalf of this Government.
2. This sum represents actual expenditure to the
amount of $3,700 on repairs to British Section thirty-ton
open wagon No.74 which was seriously damaged by bombs at
Tong Tou Ha, near bridge No.172, in Chinese territory, on
1st December, 1937. I enclose for your information
three photographs showing the extent of the damage
together with a report by the Manager of the British
Section, Kowloon-Canton Railway.
3. A further expenditure of $300 has had to be
incurred in effecting minor repairs to British Section Engine No.7A, Water Wagon No.122 and Goods Wagons Nos.118, 2 and 13 respectively which were slightly damaged by bomb explosions and machine gun fire from aeroplanes at Sheung Ping on 9th December, 1937. The balance of the claim,
